I Said To My Soul Be Still

Michael Kemp researches everyday environments and removes aspects of them from their original context, carefully composing them as photographs that resemble abstract painting. These ‘found works’ examine the accidental products of our environment, details removed from the perspective of their surroundings. Playing upon scale, the subject is often unclear. From miniature to massive, these works display the beauty of simplicity, repetition and decay. Moving into colour and away from grids, this study of walls in London evolved themed around a piece of graffiti found scrawled on one of the subjects. ‘I said to my soul be still’ turned out to be a quote from T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘East Coker’.
