About The Artwork

This is one installment within the “Found Object As Poem” Series, which features objects found, bartered or traded during my travels. Shown here are two pocket reliquaries, one of St. Francis of Assisi and the other of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Both contain relics. Mystics of various faith traditions typically speak of an experience of unity with ultimate reality. St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the men’s Franciscan Order, is known to be the first recorded individual to bear the stigmata, or the wounds of Christ. Pronounced a saint in 1228, the Italian friar is recognized as the patron saint of animals and the environment. St. Thérèse of Lisieux, a French Carmelite nun, was beatified in 1923 and canonized in 1925. She is also widely known as “The Little Flower of Jesus”. This set of reliquaries has an accompanying poem, written for it or around it. This on-going project of penning original poems based on found objects explores the idea of the gift economy, almost a century after anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski first discovered and described the Kula Ring, or Kula ceremonial exchange system, practiced by the Trobriand Islanders. This set of reliquaries and their accompanying poem may be purchased at USD112,800.
