This is a book of collage... (24 separate pages excluding the cover). I've been working on a series called "Lost and Found" based on one of my poems: What hides beneath the hardened surface? What shies behind our feigned disguise? What lives beyond the barren shallows? The depths reveal the jewels we hide. That poem is a metaphor for my life. I grew up in a town and place which seemed (in many ways)... hard and barren. The irony is that deep beneath our feet lay the Witwatersrand Gold Reef (which has supplied more than 50% of all the gold ever mined on earth). I have been thinking a lot about what lies beneath. Not only physically (like the gold beneath our barren farm lands when I was a child)... but also metaphorically. What jewels do we - as people - hide from the world? What are the assumptions that others make about us - from what they see on the surface of our masks and smiles? What's hidden BEYOND that? Perhaps I'm a hopeless idealist... but I'm always searching for the *treasure* that people hide within themselves. I've (never) been moved by the externals, the masks, the image that people like to present to the world... but I have this insatiable curiosity to understand what's BEHIND all that... what's BENEATH all that... My Lost & Found series of work (which includes a small mountain of books, installations and work that I've never shown anyone... until now)... seeks to explore those possibilities. Also... (because I have a bit of an obsession with treasure hunts, stories, and experiences)... I've made sure that each and every art work has at least two hidden secrets. Only the owner or the buyer will get to uncover these (I won't be adding them to the photos). I have always loved the idea of creating multi-dimensional art... so that it's *more* than something beautiful to look at. As a musician and poet, I try to weave in other things... and hide tiny treasures in secret places. In the case of this book - there's one hidden artwork (not shown in the photos)... and about 4 hidden "messages" including two poems.

Heather Perdu is not my real name. It's my way of trying to separate myself from my own limited-thinking and self-sabotaging insecurities. It's my way of trying to quietly establish my work - away, away AWAY from the prying eyes of extended family and home-town'ers who don't understand my work and feel that my creative offerings are silly and ridiculous. I have felt Not-Real for most of my life. I still don't feel as though I qualify as a "real" artist (something I'm working on). Creating a pseudonym is an attempt at finding out who I really am - and what I'm capable of - without feeling the need to continually justify my creative choices to the people who know me. In a way, I'm creating a private world... where I can be who I am and do what I do. I'm comfortable with anonymity. It allows me the freedom to be myself. As Oscar Wilde said: "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he'll tell you the truth". "Heather Perdu" is my mask. Art is my truth.
