As an Artist I find myself pulling inspiration from different aspects of life. This is a piece that was inspired from my experience as a youth growing up in Los Angeles during the era of the infamous 1992 L.A. Riots. I remember wacthing my city explode in to complete pandemonium after the verdict of “not guilty" was handed down to four L.A.P.D officers for their participation in a brutal assault on a man by the name of Rodney King. Their actions were caught on video tape and made public for the world to see. I was only 11 years old but at the time my pops lived in Mid- City L.A. , right in the middle of it, and I can remember vividly the smell of smoke as I watched the cities natives take to the street in an attempt to reclaim what was theirs. The actions were that of a complete purge, a process of purification from the social exploits of businesses and unjust treatments of oppression that held no genuine interests in the community. Im sure many seen the situation as an opportunity to pillage and loot, but even that was a blessing because it played as a wake up call to those seated in a position of hegemony. It was the peoples SHOUT from under the oppressed thumb of corrupt law and order. The same SHOUT that was displayed by my ancestors during the time of the Middle Passage. The same SHOUT that was displayed in the cities of: Philadelphia in 1726, Detroit in 1943, Newark New Jersey in1967, New York in 1943 and Watts California 1965 and the list goes on, but the SHOUT is for FREEDOM!! The flames are peril yet they symbolize possibilities of a new beginning. A new beginning where oppression is no longer the dark worlds noose in an effortless struggle of racial bigotry. The beginning to the end of the slave mentality where people of darker nations are divided among sectarianism, the beginning to the end of communities being policed and over ruled by morbid laws and sadistic law enforcement, but most of all and most importantly, the rebirth of the soul. Alchemy is the process of converting ordinary "base” metals into that of "noble" metals; such as Gold or Silver. However, inorder to do that the base metal has to under take the process of going through intense heat, FIRE, inorder to be purged of all iniquity.
