throughout the history of art and element that is often overlooked is the relationship between the artist and his parents. One can look to Cézanne and now his parents didn't want him to be an artist or to Matisse was parents did not want him to be an artist because they were pragmatists and didn't understand the creative spirit. Such was my own case. My father was a pragmatist, an ultra-pragmatist and any economist. He never understood art he didn't seem to have the capacity to. He rarely visited my studio and on the occasion that he did, I took this photo of him in front of one of my paintings on the right and the calendar photo of a Cézanne painting on the left. As my father aged his face often reminded me of withdrawing the Picasso did as he approached death they believe is in a collection in Tokyo. This drawing always reminded me of my father. In the spirit of Picasso said I do not seek I find I have found his drawing, and overlaid it over the face of my father. The result is this image.

Philippe Sauvie was born in Portland, Oregon USA and loved to draw as a child. I love clashing the beautiful color with indifference of application.
Because I find the majority of great art to be derivative of other great art, I do not shy away from derivation in my own work. I play at being a Matisse, Picasso or a Johns, to name but a few of my favorites in the visual arts but I also borrow from pop culture as well. I examine and sometimes incorporate these assimilations to form my own artistic voice. I search for clues... sensations... tradition... inscrutable truths. Vagueness and chance connections between images are the building blocks of my art.
