About The Artwork
During my mudlarking expeditions I discover so many lost personal items. You cannot help but imagine who they once belonged to. I find a lot of war artefacts - such as military buttons, shrapnel, military cap badges - and also toy lead soldiers and bullets. What are the stories behind these objects? Are they happy or sad? This collage uses items found in the Thames to explore the notion that the river hides both sad and dark stories and beautiful dreams and memories too. If you look at the skirt of the woman it is made up of bullets and shrapnel, soldiers and other war related objects. But amongst darkness and despair, dreams and love still lives on and this is represented by the sparkling beads she is throwing up to the moon. Of course, that is my interpretation but you might have a different one. All items used, including the torso, were found on the River Thames whilst mudlarking.

Each item I use has a past history and a secret story. I like for the person looking at the artwork to see beyond the superficial nature of the art, and for their imagination to go on a journey as they imagine the person who last touched that clay pipe, or where the fragment of glass or pottery came from.
