About The Artwork

URL to film: https://vimeo.com/68716688 Duration: 2.40 minutes This video is a show reel of all the individual short films in my earliest film series this year - 'Domestic Illusion.' These shorts began as an attempt to deconstruct and reconstruct domestic imagery into something fantastical but soon became more about considering the boundaries of film, and in fact celebrating the act itself. By disavowing the factual and rendered with as little after-editing as possible, the process of filming took precedence over the end product. The process of filming became performative and questioned the conventions already set by the typical cinema experience as well as the typical domestic space. I didn't want to supply the audience with a coherent perspective but to provide a platform for conceptualising the work as event, rather than object. The film work of the Dadaists in particular were major sources in my theoretical understanding of video collage and montage. They too place an importance on the physical production of their films, the act of creation is fundamental to the outcome. One of Thomas Elsaesser’s essays in Dada and Surrealist Film, asserts that Dada films were “conceptualising the art-work as event, rather than as object” and that “it became impossible to separate technology from technique or scientific from artistic experiment.”

I am a visual artist, based in Glasgow working with experimental film, sound & collage. My practice explores deconstruction and reconstruction. I am interested in contemporary culture and it’s relationship with the archaic past and I strive to construct imagery which distorts but also unites the two. I attempt to explore the parallels between modern-day perceptions and our antecedent nostalgias as well as the prevalence of nature and landscape running through both. Working primarily with collage and film, shifting forms warp our sense of reality in a way which engages gesture, image sequence, material affect, and displaced narrative.
