About The Artwork

To make sence of the reoccurring dreams I have been experiencing in lockdown i have used collage as a way to control these thoughts and ideas to try to make sence of the subconscious. I have formed surreal portrait and created a narrative as a way of processing my emotions. The stone statute of the women represents my emotional numbness and desperate saddens. The shapes and patterns which enslave the crown of the head represent the consent thoughts of freedom and the eyes are glassed but hope full and strain in the night sky looking out into the universe. The trees represent nature and dancing women the freedom to move outside in the world.

“The artwork I produce is a combination of primary sourced photography, collage, pen and watercolour. I like to experiment with these different mediums constantly discovering new ways to adapt these creative methods into the artwork that I produce whist combining both traditional and contemporary techniques. Whether I produce a sketch, collage or painting, I always refer to a theme that is reflected throughout each piece of artwork I have created. Each image links to another as a long running narrative developing like a fragmented dream sequence. I have many influences from films I have studied to books I have read; in particular the Neo Noir film period and 90s acid house art house collections The Pre-Raphaelite movement has played a very specific role in what I create I often adopt the present day female subjects in the scene to mirror the female model which would have been presented in a Pre-Raphaelite painting, but in contrast, the garish colours and simplistic lines of Pop Art has inspired my works. Many of the collages are formed from childhood memories and personal occurrences in my life, but also the way in which I view the subject matter of the family and the role which women play in society and the family unit. The art works I create are symbolic of mass consumerism, mass media and the constant bombardment of the unrealistic goals which are forced upon us through the media, the characters and the landscapes in the collages are formed from images found in advertisements in glossy magazines, but presented in ways which form a conflicting narrative and meaning to the purpose of the original image.” The art works I have created are heavily visual and layered; I pay close attention to detail to create a rich tapestry of aesthetically-pleasing and emotionally-driven pieces but beneath the surface of colourful and bright over saturated in some cases imagery in the collages hides a darker symbolic representation of the human physic our greed, vanity and obsession with the soulless immortality of materialist values.”
