Enceladus Collage

Framed dimensions: 60 x 52 x 4 inches. This pieces extends my interest in effects of transparency and translucency and its ability to evoke feelings of depth, not just physical but also symbolic depth. The theme of this piece which is the wistfulness of memory and the elusiveness of the past is aided by these effects of tranlucency. I was working here with image transfers for the found imagery and combining it on a support of hand-made Japanese plant papers which are very thin but strong attached to make a larger sheet. Once the painting and transferring were complete I waxed the sheets to make them transparent and mounted it on an irregular grid of wood members that was inspired by the 'stick-charts' that the islanders of New Britain in the south pacific use for navigation and in rituals. The idea of using what is essentially a map for the underlying structure nicely evokes the notion of 'navigating' our recollections while at the same time emphasizing the translucency of the sheet it can be seen through and giving dimensionality to the piece. I struggled with the design of the grid simply because I didn't want the kind of regular grid we see in so much artwork. Then I remembered stick-charts whose rather eccentric structures were very expressive but also had a great connotation.
