As I go through my days, watching the development of the tiny human I helped give life, I become more and more in need of being part of his life. I know at some point, those days will go away, and since I am his biggest hero, I'm going to capitalize on that.

When I was young, my father decided he didn't want to be part of my life anymore, and he bailed on my mom and I. Yeah, I have my fair share of daddy issues, but I'm making restitution with that by trying to be the best father I can. I often fail, but I keep trying, because I never want him to experience the disappointment I did.

My boy doesn't have any singular interests, but when I see a glimmer in him of something he wants to pursue, I indulge that as much as I can. I will never be one of those parents that tells him he can be great at anything, because I believe it brings about a sense of entitlement that has ruined a lot of the current, younger generation.

I do tell him that he can do anything he puts his mind to, because I think he can. He may not be the greatest, but he can achieve a level of confidence and skill to compete with the best... if he focuses his energy. I don't know where that energy will take him, but I will indulge his interests until we find that thing, or set of things, that he enjoys the most. Then we will attack it, together.

This piece is a collaboration between my son and I, with his artistic work pieced together with my own. Some of our best days are spent together in the studio, and I can't think of a better way to spend my time.
