About The Artwork

"Fighting 'Melancholia' II" is one 8" x 8" panel. "Fighting 'Melancholia' I" is a separate 8" x 8" panel. These panels are priced and sold separately. About this work: I have been looking at the relationship between images that are cut into two or more pieces and what happens visually and narratively when they are forced apart or brought back together. Both of these panels are successful individually and together they create relationship of image and a new narrative. About the woodcut: The image of the face is a woodcut by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The title of the print is 'Melancholia' and it was made in 1919. The original print is in the collection at the Fogg Museum at Harvard University. I used a reproduction of the woodcut that was taken from the book 'Modern Prints and Drawings' by Paul Sachs (PLATE 133) published in 1954 by Alfred A. Knopf Publishers.
