This piece was inspired by a man i met who spent some time sharing his story with me. He told me about how he overcame 30 years of addiction. He described to me how he relied on alcohol to numb the problems in his life, but always ended up feeling empty. He made the decision to be born again along with starting his journey through the 12 step program. Then we spoke about how many people have different forms of addictions that may be easier to hide, but nonetheless still exist. I was so touched by his vulnerability to a complete stranger. We had just met each other, yet had already formed a bond like we were brothers. His story and my story were alike, and it was only because we took the time to listen to each other, that brought about the connection. I created this piece a little bit differently for that reason as well as to honor him. The chair is made of all positive phrases from a newspaper. It’s hard to find uplifting stories in print media; so i only cut out all the positive things to represent the support that we all need to sit on. The dress was cut from some tabloids to represent all the pointless things we wear around, in our lives that maybe pleasurable for the moment but ultimately drag us down. Lastly, her body is made out of poetry from my favorite poetry book "The Rose That Grew from the Concrete"-Tupac Shakur It is inevitable that we will carry many none-fruitful things in our lives, but its important to rest on the truth, positivity and peace that comes from Jesus. This piece is 5ft tall so you have to stand back to appreciate the message; just as in life you have to take a step back at times, to see a new perspective. If you are struggling with any form of addiction, rest assured that you are not alone. Find comfort and peace of mind in your creator.
