About The Artwork

This shadow box contains a hand-shaped metal reliquary filled with vintage dice, set on a red silk background. Red is associated with exorcising evil spirits. The 5-fingered hand, called the Khamissa or Khamsa is a protective symbol against the evil eye. Khamsa means “5” in Arabic. The hand holds a collection of dice referring to fate, karma or chance. The 4 corner circles refer to harmony and balance. In Japanese culture, the number 4 is associated with death. This sets up a dynamic between the numbers 5 (protection) and 4 (death). The exterior is hand-covered in paper with a light protective glaze. Interior sides and exterior of box are covered in paper. Box has protective glass front. It has a fixture for hanging flush against a wall or can stand on a flat surface. Year Created: 2017

Born USA 1944. Indie film director and collage artist, currently based in New York. For the past 40 years I have constructed collages and shadow boxes for private collectors. My work centers around the theme of cultural identity. Much of my life has been spent outside the United States (French Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East) in places where I needed to acquire a new language, learn a new alphabet and adhere to the subtleties of different social customs. These are places with their own cultural narratives, simultaneously rejecting and welcoming American influences, absorbing and transforming them to fit a new cultural space. It seems a natural consequence of this global mix that I work in a collage format, appropriating the language, signs and icons of other cultures, regardless of the medium. I attempt to reduce a subject to a few evocative images, treating image as icon.
