About The Artwork

We are living in a time when people are afraid to confront the truth around the uncertainty of their reality. A time when our culture celebrates “the uniqueness of the individual” in ways that, ironically, are mimicked by so many others by accepting trends blindly without any conscious judgment as to whether they feel represented by those trends. A time when people are afraid of what they will see and what they will hear when their deepest thoughts are revealed. In an existence where we desperately want to be heard and valued but we are too afraid to open our eyes and see – we must wonder who are we becoming? I explore and identify how subconscious recognition can influence the ways human beings can see. Illustrated through modern-day portraits created with found magazine paper, I evaluate different colors and forms within one of the unique elements about each of us that are unlike anyone else, our eyes. Internalizing the concept that the way someone can look at an object is altered by what they have already seen, I attempt to explain my subject’s iris color with themes they favor to create a visual map of their individuality. My goal with this work is to give a viewer a unique opportunity to choose an alternative to the world they consciously know, to face their fears and to be able to escape to a place where they are guided by their perceived humanity and not by race, religion, status, or cultural identity.
