About The Artwork

Caldo Bocca / Hot Mouth Series This series of ten digital prints draws on the iconography of Renaissance portraiture. The figures are collages made up of segments of nineteenth century wood engraved illustrations of insects, sea creatures and plants. They are dressed up in female costume from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries. I find the delicate sepia lines, tonal values and pattern irresistible. In some works these surreal figures pose as tourists in front of scenes from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa. One figure is found painting the Clock Tower. In spite of the decorative quality in the work, the characters are a reflection of vulnerability and alienation that may sometimes be felt in interaction with the Other. One figure has to walk on five primitive wooden legs, while the seahorse- figure has no skin to protect her insides. I did these collages by hand and then continued on the computer using Photoshop. It is a wonderful medium in which to manipulate size, colour and layers to create the surreal.

I was born in 1962 in South Africa and live in Cape Town. I earned my Bachelor of Visual Arts at UNISA (the University of SouthAfrica). I have participated in several shows in Cape Town. My fascination with depth psychology and the workings of the subconscious mind finds expression in the surreal elements in my work. My focus is on the figurative as representation of inner awareness. I always listen to music while working, as it helps me to transcend the urge to controll the outcome. My mark-making is spontaneous and expressive and I allow chance to play a role in the direction I go. My creative process involves finding images (from different sources) that resonate with me on a mostly subconscious level and then creating a new image through juxtaposition. This I then transfer to canvas/paper and translate into a painting or drawing. .
