Collage: Fabric, Paper, Acrylic, Interactive on Paper, Wood.
I want my work to be like a good poem It should be something a visitor can return to repeatedly finding fresh ideas and meanings each time. The way I work is by layering images over images until surprising new images begin to surface, meanings that are suggestions to the viewer' own psyche, a magical place where the work and the viewer engage.
My work is constructed of brilliant, seemingly unrelated pieces that are carefully layered to form a single powerful image. I use printed, painted and dyed papers and fabrics adhered to a wood surface which I then extensively overpaint with acrylic. The work is varnished until it does not need to be behind glass. This allows the viewer to really enjoy the wonderful layers, depths and textures of the paint, paper and fabric more easily.
In the body of work I am producing now I have been able to internalize what I have learned about controlling the surface from artist's like Cezanne, Matisse, DeKooning and Albers, and about design and pattern from Japanese artists
