About The Artwork

This work was originally inspired by the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle's oeuvre, and in particular by her depiction of women in the series known as 'Nanas'. Two characters, floating in a dark space, are dancing with their own shadows. The relationship between Nana and the Great Firebird is depicted, while white and colored squares convey a spatial dynamic that counterweights the fluidity expressed by the dance of the two characters.

Salvatore Grande, architect, illustrator, painter, was born in Taranto (Apulien, Italy) in 1947. He spends his youth in Argentina and completes his studies in Còrdoba. In 1976 he moves to Milan and works as an architect both in Italy and in the Middle East. At the beginning of the eighties he starts painting. Architecture and painting meet in the complementarity between views and visions, between the severity of perspective and the quickness of the painting gesture of the brush-stroke. Salvatore Grande has exhibited his work in Italy, Switzerland and Argentina. He lives and works in Lugano
