About The Artwork

Portrait of Karl Marx is a wine cork and coins mosaic made on a hardboard. The object is one of a series ‘Leaders of the World Prosperity’, representing the greatest thinkers of the past, who factually created / in whose ideas are based contemporary world’s philosophy - post-Darwinism, post-Marxism, and post-Freudianism. Wine cork mosaic based on the idea of recycling, respect for nature and matter, conjoin artist’s love for mosaics and collages and wine parties. The mosaic was created in the unique author’s technic. The idea was born after I collected a bag of corks in 2009 – 2010. For optimization of the weighing of objects, I decided to slice the corks into thin pieces, which build a beautiful varied unique surface. The finishing gloss is made of silicone filler and silicone-based enamel. Еhe engineering design of the work is thought out - a sheet of polystyrene is sewn between two sheets of hardboard, which lightens the weight and creates volume. For fastening, a wooden beam is laid inside the structure, to which hinges and a chain are attached, capable of withstanding a significant weight of the work (about 8 kilos/20 pounds) Cork portraits call on to think about ‘great ideas’ from an ironic point of view: how much wine has been drunk, during the writing of these theories, which shook the world.

I was born in soviet Moscow, my first impressions from childhood were barricades near the White House during the Velvet revolution of 1991. Since that time liberty is the main value for me. In my art, I combine artistic, social, and political contexts, search for paradoxes of meanings and understandings. The genres I prefer to work on are painting, collage, caricature, decorative art, conceptual art, and photorealism.
