About The Artwork

This is one installment within the “Found Object As Poem” Series, which features objects found, bartered or traded during my travels. Shown here are three vintage artifacts, combined to form an unusual charm bracelet. The most prominent charm is the antique relic of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order, and now recognized as the patron saint of soldiers. Born in 1491 into a Basque noble family, Ignatius was first a knight before becoming a priest and theologian. He was beatified in 1609, canonized in 1622, and declared patron saint of all spiritual retreats in 1922. The relic, encased in a metal locket, is set against a pocket watch accessory ending in heart, cross and anchor charms. Both of these accessories are linked to the contemporary charm bracelet by Anna Sui as a counterpoint, bridging the vast divide between ideas of tradition and the postmodern. This set of artifacts has an accompanying poem, written for it or around it. This on-going project of penning original poems based on found objects explores the idea of the gift economy, almost a century after anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski first discovered and described the Kula Ring, or Kula ceremonial exchange system, practiced by the Trobriand Islanders. This set of artifacts and accompanying poem may be purchased at USD138,000.
