About The Artwork

I made this artwork as a part of my residency in New York. I had collected these American Apparel Bags over long years of shopping there with the eventual intention of creating art with it. I combined and repurposed other drawings, edits, and photocopies along with the repurposed bags. While American Apparel was very cloudy with a shady reputation, I was always in love with the original concept of the brand itself; fair wages, American made, sweatshop free, and the wearability of the clothes. The design of the bag itself I found particularly genius, with that you have so many stores in different cities across the USA and the entire world, while it still being "American" apparel. Another main feature of the piece is the handles, that protrude from the canvas into the 3D space. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Ryan Dennis is a multimedia artist born and raised in northern New Jersey, his roots are in painting and photo manipulation. Beginning his practice in the early 2010s, while a senior in high school. In the time after that, he has expanded more into combining traditional and digital methods to create his work, using various mediums such as paint, ink, collage, decoupage, and sound. Using an interdisciplinary approach to the overall process, the strongest and most prominent element to his process is repurposing, either with his own past work or with found sources. With this, he examines, crosses, and punctures the line between freedom and control, with contentment in both ideologies. He finds most of his inspiration from music, fashion, 60s - 80s Nightlife culture, 80s in New York, nature, and humor. _ Currently he is working on immersive projects that intend to distort the lines between mediums and language, and an introduction of the very core of his practice. With this he will expand into performance and even further into music.
