I provided this diptych to the Marbles & Ware auction at Slap Ya Papa, Waterloo Vaults, 19th September 2015. The event coincided with the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the pop-up by Slpa Ya Papa had a New Orleans theme in terms of decor, food and music. The painting was purchased by my brother-in-law, Dr. David Lloyd. Sandpaper is a humble material, yet it is instrumental in the building of houses. In use it acquires the colours of the surfaces and materials sanded. The abrasion process takes grit off the sandpaper, and handling it causes creases and tears. A house made out of sandpaper is a metaphor for how dwelling places affect their inhabitants, and vice-versa. The generations of people living in them change a house, and the house change them too. This house sits in a landscape made of painted sandpapers of different types, and the house itself is of sandpaper, split across the diptych. This symbolises deep-seated differences between the occupants. In the context of the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, it can be taken as representing racial and class tensions within the ‘house’ of New Orleans.
