The Accused Collage

A recurring theme in my work speaks to the abuse suffered by young women and men at the hands of those in power. 'The Accused' addresses sexual abuse but whether it is a parent limiting a child's potential or a spouse limiting the other's opportunities or a ruler limiting a people's freedom—the theme is power over powerless. Some get caught, like these in 'The Accused' but most get away with their crimes. leaving fractured, traumatized victims in their paths, limiting the potential of creating a world that can move forward. I use texture both visually and through touch to remove the preciousness of the art, hoping to engage the viewer more quickly. I build layers, usually three or four to raise the work from the surface and to infer a visual sense of history.
