About The Artwork

My practice focuses on the articulation of gender differences. I am concerned with the ways in which identity is structured in terms of gender difference. My work plays on the tension between the public and the private, questioning themes inherent within gender politics and feminism. Using materials that hint at the fetishistic, describing bodily and domestic associations. Inspired by the work of Griselda Pollock, Judith Butler and Laura Mulvey.

Theresa graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a distinction in MFA Fine Art and was selected as a recipient of the School of Art and Design Scholarship Award. Theresa’s research has a specialist focus on feminist practice and theory. She has exhibited and performed widely most recently at Asylum Gallery, Nottingham Contemporary, G39, NN Contemporary, Ovalhouse, The Yard Theatre, Anise Gallery, Espacio Gallery and Primary. She is a member of Axisweb, a curated platform for artists and has had extensive experience of working as an Artist Facilitator in several organisations, including Nottingham Contemporary, Harley Gallery, Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery and with numerous schools and community groups. Theresa’s practice encompasses live art, photography, film and sculpture to reinforce positive feminist perspectives on the female body. To subvert the prevailing tropes of femininity as prescribed through a patriarchal lens. Her work investigates questions relating to the body in site, alongside themes of representation and gender, drawing influence from patriarchal consumerist capitalism and exploring the idea of the body as inherently performic. Her current practice is supported by research into feminist theorists including Luce Irigaray, Elizabeth Grosz, Julia Kristeva, Sandra Lee Bartky and Rosi Braidotti.
