About The Artwork

Description: Based on vintage photo of Hattie Estelle Phillips, age 11, born November 3,1893, the year of the World's Fair. Diagrams and text refer to new technologies and exotic displays at the Fair including Little Egypt (belly dancer), 120,000 incandescent lights and Mozart's spinet. The interior wood block and ball covered in text are mounted on a brass rod and are movable.Free-moving ball inside box. Interior and exterior of box are covered in marbled paper. It has a fixture in back for hanging flush against a wall or can stand on a flat surface. Because of the free-moving elements inside the box, it cannot be shipped as it would be damaged in shipping. If buyer lives in NYC, I would be happy to sell through Saatchi and deliver by hand. Medium: wood, paper, vintage photograph, metal, Year Created: 2003

Born USA 1944. Indie film director and collage artist, currently based in New York. For the past 40 years I have constructed collages and shadow boxes for private collectors. My work centers around the theme of cultural identity. Much of my life has been spent outside the United States (French Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East) in places where I needed to acquire a new language, learn a new alphabet and adhere to the subtleties of different social customs. These are places with their own cultural narratives, simultaneously rejecting and welcoming American influences, absorbing and transforming them to fit a new cultural space. It seems a natural consequence of this global mix that I work in a collage format, appropriating the language, signs and icons of other cultures, regardless of the medium. I attempt to reduce a subject to a few evocative images, treating image as icon.
