Fragrant fragments Artwork

Working off of the Kolvicto Deco Houses series that I documented for the purpose of my dissertation, these archival images of Kolkata are placed in an eternally fragmented limbo. The images were taken at a point in time when all the old houses of Kolkata were facing demolition due to gentrification. The identity of the neighbourhood and the city in a way was being slowly but surely erased and I in turn wanted very much to archive their facades to ‘save’ them. Recently reading about the concept of mass exodus due to social, environmental, or even politically hostile environments is what prompted this as well. What would our sense of home look like? What do we know of the structures of our past? As someone who moved every two years once throughout her life, migration seems normal. But to anyone else, it is a new terrain that is outside their comfort zone.
