About The Artwork

This image is from my "Anonymous Portraits" Series. I was exploring San Miguel de Allende on foot. A mecca for artists and retirees, San Miguel is a historic Mexican town full of Spanish colonial architecture and vibrant colors. It is also a study in contrasts: the old and the new, the natives and the touristas, the rich and the poor. In the city center the walls of the buildings touch the sidewalks, and there is little room for other people to pass by. I was enraptured by an old woman sitting on the sidewalk, slumping motionless with her bolsas (shopping bags). After a few moments I realized that she was a beggar, probably asleep. Then a young woman passed by her and didn’t acknowledge the old woman’s presence except by stepping away to pass her by. Beggars were a common sight in San Miguel, but I felt a tinge of sadness. Obviously well-off, the young woman didn’t acknowledge the beggar. I was just an observer, not in a position to make a judgement of what was probably a common sight. In this photo I was struck by the colors in the wall - how they separated the women into their own worlds - and decided to make use of the colors by emphasizing the movement of the younger woman and the stillness of the older one in Photoshop®. It was as if the beggar were frozen in time, stuck in her life forever. This image is reminiscent of those by the French street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. He was a major influence in my artistic vision through his concept of “Le moment décisif” (The decisive moment). This is the exact moment that tells the story of the picture, and it is what a street photographer strives to capture. I think that this image captures more than that moment: it shows the gap between the rich and the poor, the new and the old, the intrinsic injustices in life, the poignancy of beauty. May it stimulate you, the viewer, to contemplate the meaning of these things for your life.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
