About The Artwork

A drawing belonging to a series I am exhibiting this May and dedicated to the Greek ‘holy family’ of medicine. The mythological figure of Asclepius, son of Apollo, seems to have had a special place in the ‘Empuries’ Greek port settlement in the northeastern coast of Spain. I have been visiting this archeological site for years and wonder about this mythic healing figure connecting us to Epidaurus. I created nine drawings dedicated to this family: Asclepius, Apollo, Python, Chiron, Epione, Higia, Panacea, Egle-Telesforo and Yaso. I also created a much larger piece that situates the tale of Apollo and Python and the creation of the oracle of Delphi. I placed these two figures in the surrounding landscape around the mountainous area that we call today Delphi. I have not exhibited this piece in the exhibition due to the fact that framing it became a real economic issue. The figure I have imagined, shows Asclepius accompanied by three of his associated animals: the snake, a dog and a rat, and situated right at the beach in front of Empuries. Asclepius planting his staff and converting this place into a ‘Genius Loci’; a sort of narrative and emplacement. In Epidaurus there is a marble base, the remains of the temple, where the patients began their healing process, and where the awaited ‘visiting dream’ appeared as the initial therapeutic step towards its healing evolution. The longed-for dream, patiently awaited as a divine imaginative message, formed the initiatory part of a therapeutic process with several steps organized by the experts in this healing center of Antiquity.
