All living things are precious. The story of life includes not only humans, of course, but dogs. Among the animals, dogs are renowned for sharing the closest and longest-lasting relationship with humans, a fruitful partnership that has lasted centuries. Nevertheless, in South Korea, black-colored dogs, as well as mixed breeds, are the least adopted types of dogs because South Koreans prefer lighter-colored dogs and purebred dogs. I started drawing the ‘Black Dog’ series because I wanted to convey the message that the mixed breed and black-coated dogs are just as beautiful as other dogs and that the Korean trend towards lighter coats and pure breeds is neglecting a lot of great dogs and thereby stranding them in shelters. Another disturbing trend I wanted to explore in this series is that of ear cropping, a procedure given to some dog breeds to make the ears stand straight up in a “point” instead of flopping over naturally. Common breeds who receive this procedure are the Doberman, Schnauzer and Kane Corso. With a warm heart towards dogs of every shape and size, I present to you: “The Black Dog Series - Uncropped.”
