About The Artwork

Agnolo Bronzino, was an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence. He trained with Pontormo, the leading Florentine painter of the first generation of Mannerism. Many of Bronzino's works are still in Florence but other examples can be found in the National Gallery, London, and elsewhere. Here we present a scene from his painting Flaying of Marsyas. We restore the incomplete legs, with human legs and not as the limbs of a goat(which was Bronzino's intention . Flaying of Marsyas is a 1531 painting by Bronzino. The painting is held in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It depicts the flaying (skinning alive) of Marsyas by Apollo after the satyr rashly challenged the Greek god to a musical contest. Also we studied Bronzino drawing Marsyas and Midas, two of the main figures seated at the right in Bronzino's The Contest of Apollo and Marsyas, a subject inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. This drawing shows Apollo's rival, Pan, whose identity is indicated not only by the panpipes but also by the incomplete legs, which would have been represented below the knees as the limbs of a goat. Seated Nude Youth Playing Panpipes, ca. 1530–32 Musée du Louvre, Département des Arts Graphiques, Paris Tiepolo, was an Italian painter and printmaker from the Republic of Venice who painted in the Rococo style, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. Giovan Battista Tiepolo, together with Giambattista Pittoni, Canaletto, Giovan Battista Piazzetta, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, and Francesco Guardi are considered the traditional Old Masters of that period. Here we present a River god from his oil on canvas painting : Apollo and Daphne, Louvre Museum.
