Step into a drawing that mirrors the profound transformation of our relationship with cinema in recent years. In an era where the silver screen has taken on a unique significance, my artwork encapsulates the essence of this evolving cultural phenomenon. The impact of cinema on our society has never been more apparent, especially in the face of recent challenges. The closure of theaters during the quarantine marked the end of an era—the fading scent of popcorn, the allure of VIP zones, the enveloping darkness of colossal movie theaters, and the anticipation in lines for tickets—all replaced by a void. Yet, in the midst of closed streets and shuttered theaters, a new cinematic experience emerged. The screens of our rooms became portals to diverse worlds, and the sofa transformed into a throne of cinematic exploration. My drawing captures this shift, weaving a narrative that transcends physical spaces and delves into the intimate realms of personal screens. As a painter, I hold a profound respect for cinematography. The cinema, for me, has been a sanctuary—an oasis where I "charge my batteries" of inspiration. The interplay of light and shadow on the big screen, the immersive storytelling, and the collective energy of a shared cinematic experience have always fueled my creative spirit. This piece is an homage to the resilience of cinema, which, even in a world of closed theaters and isolated viewing, has managed to enrich the lives of many. It invites you to reflect on the transformative power of film and how, in the absence of traditional cinema spaces, the magic of storytelling continues to unfold in the intimate corners of our homes.

Vera Fonseka is an artist based in Portugal whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. She describes her works as conveying the paradoxical existence between the scrupulous intricacy of the details and the brutality of iconography. Fonseka's artistic process is marked by her use of mixed techniques with adhesives, fabrics, acrylics, and oils on canvas. She was born in 1982 in Tallinn (ex URSS, actually Estonia) in an actors-family. In 2003 Vera moved to Portugal where she's been living since then. Inspired by Kandinsky, Frank Stella, Beatriz Milhazes and Alexandra Mir, Vera Fonseka tries to make conceptual contribution in Contemporary Art.
