About The Artwork

I draw in my sketchbook every day, and every day I listen to jazz, so drawing jazz musicians was inevitable. I not sure if my listening informs my drawing, but it might. This drawing has a certain spareness, and I prefer pianists whose playing is spare: Tristano, Cole, Shearing, Evans, Brubeck, Powell. I took piano lessons briefly as a child and realized I got more satisfaction from playing my parents' stereo. It's possible to listen with greater skill than you are able to play. Looking at photographs of Brubeck I was astonished at how slender his fingers were. His style was muscular because he'd had to overcome a spinal injury early in his career, hence his block chords and fewer tinkling notes. Brubeck isn't my first jazz portrait; I also have a print up of a Coleman Hawkins drawing, and another print of a saxophone. A few years ago I drew a portrait of the pianist Erroll Garner for the Erroll Garner Foundation. I listened to his albums while drawing it.
