About The Artwork

We find ourselves at a North London bus stop in high summer, on a very hot day when the light is bright and high. I was struck by the overabundance of signs ordering us to go one way, and the fact that the figure in the scene is completely ignoring them and looking the opposite way (for a bus that will be taking her in that direction anyway). This drawing was created with oil pastels on paper primed with a visible pink acrylic ground. I found that oil pastel was the perfect medium to study cracks in walls, graffiti art and the curves of sheet metal. This piece is part of a small collection of pastel drawings and a acrylic paintings exploring the tension between opposite directions, using figures caught in urban street scenes and going about their daily lives. It is delivered unframed.

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
