About The Artwork

I only have a few of these smaller folders, and I love them; for some reason they feel more intimate than the larger ones even though they are only a few inches smaller. There are a couple layered figures beneath this top image that have been painted out but you can still see light lines beneath. I had trouble with her head, so in a fury, I took it out with a big black crayon and I liked the energy of it. Once I took out her head, the words on the right no longer applied, so I added a remnant from another drawing only mostly covering the words. I often use my own work for collage material. I added stenciled patterns in the arm and chest and did some scribbling around the words. This is another 2-5 minute gesture drawing pose that just turned out. They rarely do, but once in a while… HISTORY: A very large cache of vintage handmade manila folders from the 50's, 60's and 70's were donated to me by a retiring Albuquerque Public School librarian in the mid 90's. Bins of collage material sat in my garage until a few years ago when I decided to go through them. Most of the image archives were plastic coated and not suitable for collage, so I decided to finally get rid of it. As I was dumping the contents, the folders themselves caught my attention. I have always loved folders and have kept myself organized in them since I was 14. That manila color is my favorite color and I love the texture and thickness of the paper itself. I love the tabs, especially in this case, handmade. I never pay attention to the file names themselves, but they usually play a part in the overall meaning of the piece. I have three sizes of folders and each one I tore in half at the fold so I have stacks of all the sizes. As part of my art practice I go to weekly figure drawing groups. In figure drawing, I am fast, furious and heavy handed as I carve my line out of space. Each week I draw, go back to the studio, paint over, collage over and write over the parts that don’t seem to be working. I go back to figure drawing and redraw, then cut, paste, paint, and draw and draw and draw until I get something that speaks to me. I never throw anything out. I work and rework until I discover a story evolving. In this way, my practice is also my process. My folders are a limited-edition series of drawings where I only have a certain amount of them and when they are done, that’s it. I work on many pieces at once, so a figurative folder can take years to finish. I layer and layer and rework and rework. My process is not linear, so I may begin with the words in the middle. I write them or draw them as they come to me, not intentionally trying to write a story. English is written left to right and top to bottom, so that is typically how the audience reads the piece. So the meaning you get from the piece is your own story, and not the story I was attempting to write or tell. In this way, my work is collaborative wherein I create the piece, but ultimately the viewer develops the meaning.
