About The Artwork

Hermes and the Infant Dionysus, also known as the Hermes of Praxiteles or the Hermes of Olympia is an ancient Greek sculpture of Hermes and the infant Dionysus discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the Temple of Hera, Olympia, in Greece. It is displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. We present the statue complex with all the anatomical details, especially in the torso area. Behind there is a small Doric temple, which corresponds to the large Doric temple of Zeus, near of where the statue was found. The Temple of Zeus at Olympia was an ancient Greek temple, dedicated to the god Zeus. The temple, built in the second quarter of the fifth century BC, was the very model of the fully developed classical Greek temple of the Doric order.
