Hiraeth is a Welsh word with no direct English translation, it can be described as being a bit like home sickness but it can be for a time, a person or people,a place or state of being. This portrait is an example of what I term 'hyper-portraiture', an attempt to communicate more than a visage can without using bachground and surroundings. Here the landscape represents the elements of thier homeland the subject misses. One persons experience of thier country, forever on thier mind, expressed as a mental landscape, executed with the marrying of implied textures to blend physical and mental reality.

Arron Kuiper (b.1984) is a Welsh artist who has practiced for over a decade in his native North Wales. He has garnered a handful of national awards, shown extensively across the U.K. including 2 Solo Exhibitions, has work on permanent display and in a number of private collections as well as featuring in international art publications. He is currently represented by Tides Gallery, Swansea. He is best known for his invention of Sculptural Oil Painting but continues to combine a wide range of media and invented techniques with work in more traditional materials. This broad experimental approach and tendency towards zero waste is borne of growing up in poverty where, though he never quite had to beg for materials (lucky, as not many people carry around a tube of burnt umber on their person) he learned to develop and produce work with whatever was to hand. His themes and inspirations are as varied as the media he uses (and let's be honest, interpretation is in the eye of the viewer), but broadly it's about the people, land, environment and history of his homeland. He continues to make work in his shed, on a hillside, in the woods of rural North Wales.
