It was introduced in the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), and then in the next two films, The Dead Man's Cage (2006) and The End of the World (2007). He is also the main character of the series of children's books, The Caribbean Pirates: Jack Sparrow, who relates his youth, and his image was introduced to the amusement park that inspired the movies when it was restructured in 2006. The character has also appeared in numerous video games. Sparrow is the Pirates of the Caribbean Sea and can be dishonest, surviving using more intelligence and negotiation than weapons and force; although fighting when necessary, tries to escape from dangerous situations. Sparrow is introduced to try to regain his Black Pearl from his former top officer, Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), in the first film, and in the other two films he strives to get rid of his bloodload of legendary Davy Jones, while struggling with the East India Company. Originally, Sparrow was conceived for the first film as a sneaker guiding the hero, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), but Johnny Depp's performance made his role altered. Depp's emphatic and excentric characterization, partly inspired by Pepé le Pew and Keith Richards, turned Sparrow into an unconventional anti-eroic, becoming the main character of the three films. Depp received his first Oscar nomination, and in a lifetime he imitated art, Richards played a cameo role portraying Jack Sparrow's father.
