About The Artwork

During the pandemic, I found myself taking long drives into nearby states. This series was inspired by many drives throughout the midwest. Nature, farms, and industry in rural areas are the focus of these pieces. I find this abstract style for a landscape fun to do and interesting to look at. I used chalk and pastels for these drawings. Using my hands in the chalk brought back memories of my childhood growing up in the suburbs of Chicago. All materials were donated to me.

Social connections, the inner world, and the relationship humans have to nature influence my artwork. Dreams and altered states of reality are themes in my work. The weird science of perception and sensation influences me, I want these interpretations of reality to be colorful and bright. I use found objects, donated paper or fabric samples, old tile, and house paint. I want to create beautiful things out of discarded materials. Every piece of oil pastel that crumbled while drawing was reincorporated into the piece. I wanted to give the materials new life. Growing up, construction and industrial factories were a fascination for me. I would walk around the city for hours, stopping to watch buildings go up and streets be torn apart. Sometimes, I see my drawings as a build or demolition. My work features bright colors and twisted lines. I don’t want my compositions to feel too grounded. I like the idea of solids floating on water, flowing lava, earthquakes. Humans manipulate the natural world and the world manipulates what humans can achieve. This struggle leads to innovation and growth. As a psychology student at university, started my deep dive into psychology, neuroanatomy, and human perception. Other classes that influenced me in school were anthropology, biology, geology, and chemistry. Going to museums, art shows, talking to other artists, and reading about art history helped me think about composition and materials I needed to achieve the right end result.
