About The Artwork
"It's a Girl" is a part of the series "Secondhand Smoke." The series itself traces my maternal family's history of violence and unsatisfied, disagreeable women, and the injustice of their lives. This image depicts a recreation of my older siblings and my father holding my body the day I was born. My infant form has been replaced with bodily chords, and my sisters face has been pricked to simulate a happy face.
