About The Artwork

"Searching the Mysterious Side of the Landscape" Sometimes while searching for subject -matter in the woods certain rock formations can unexpectedly contribute to an idea. The rock in question is the face in the drawing. Some distortion on the original photo was made. A portion of an accompanying rock was used to face the other. Once combined there was a suggestion of aggressiveness and passiveness that I liked. The aggressive rock formation is yelling harsh words at the passive one who is hurt by the aggression. The hurt escalates to a reddened face. This intensifies until an evil provocateur comes through an opening to peer on the victim's neck. Whispering instructions are made to do away with oneself, perhaps by drowning, the casket is floating and waiting. The intensified colors are justified to heighten the intense drama. A dramatic note for self-control. Hurtful words barked to others go on an unpredicted journey; containing multiple punches of impact.

Searching the Mysterious Side of the Landscape Retired on Long Island so there is more time for artwork, walking some, running some, and exploring a love of nature. God and family are there too. Currently, my artwork involves the use of colored pencils on quality paper. The theme is Searching the Mysterious Side of the Landscape. I use landscape imagery as a means to search for the unseen. Perhaps to uncover a mystery, to show a struggle, or to creatively suggest that there is more going on than we can see. Most of us are confronted with notions of something more than ourselves present in our environment. Forces are at work. Is evil real? I question if the human heart has really changed that much over time. Evil can be tempting. But, there is something holding evil back or all would be evil and I could not recognize it. The something must be greater than evil. But this will change too. Can one imagine the freedom to be had from experiencing the idea that there is no thought of evil from anyone, any institution, anywhere in the world? The struggle against evil actions such as killing, hurting, hatred, slavery, stealing, and others, will no longer be active and can finally find rest.
