About The Artwork

King Midas was the ruler of Gordion City which is nowadays Ankara, the capital of Turkey. One day Pan and Apollo had a contest about who had the more beautiful melody and King Midas was one of the judges. Midas, decided that Pan’s melody was better than Apollo’s, Apollo was furious and told Midas that he needed bigger ears. Then, King Midas’s ears started to grow and turned into donkey ears. Midas tried to hide his ears from everyone by wearing big hats and heavy helmets. One day his barber learned about his secret while he was cutting his hair. Midas told him that if he told anyone he had big ears he would get him killed. The barber kept his secret but with time it started to make him uncomfortable and he went near a cliff then dug a deep hole. He shouted “King Midas has Donkey ears!” several times. The sound traveled with an echo after sometime all of the kingdom knew about the King’s secret. This piece was created to signify how important it is to keep secrets.
