The Wild Camel (Camelus ferus) is the 8th most endangered large mammal in the world with only 1000 remaining. They are totally separate to the single-humped dromedary camel or double-humped Bactrian camel and separated from any other known form of camel over 750,000 years ago. In the Desert of Lop in China, the wild camel has adapted to drink salt-water slush with a higher salt content than seawater. In addition, the Desert of Lop formed part of China’s former nuclear test site and the wild camel not only survived 43 atmospheric nuclear tests but also continues to breed naturally. The Wild Camel Protection Foundation (WCPF) @wildcamels is the only charity in the world with a specific mission to save this remarkable mammal from extinction. In 2004 a captive wild camel breeding centre (the only one of its kind) was established In Mongolia with eight wild camels. It is now home to 35 Wild Camels and eight additional Wild Camels have been re-introduced into their natural habitat. But the breeding centre has reached its holding capacity; a second site has been identified and funding is urgently required to establish it. This beautiful drawing has been done by Charlotte Williams @charlottewilliams.art to help raise these funds. To purchase the original drawing, or to buy one of the limited edition prints, please visit www.wildcamels.com Prints cost £200 (65 cm x 54 cm, including border), and the original artwork is available for £7000. It will of course be framed professionally after the lockdown! YOUR support would be hugely appreciated, so together we can save this amazing animal from extinction.
