VIEW IN MY ROOM
Drawing, Pencil on Paper
Size: 12 W x 15 H x 0.2 D in
When I have an empty hour I'll draw faces. Not faces I see; faces I imagine; faces that emerge from my pencil or pen. I see influences in all of my drawings because I learned how to draw by observing other drawings by masters like Ben Shahn, William Hogarth, Paul Hogarth, Ronald Searle, Hans Holbein, Garth Williams, Saul Steinberg, Graham Laidler, William Steig. I draw differently from day to day and differently in pen and pencil. This drawing is a layering of two sheets of faces, each sheet in a slightly different tone to make them distinct. The faces are smug, cold, amiable, cruel, bland, cunning, careful, superior, distracted, detached, like faces encountered on a subway or an elevator or a police station line-up. I draw men with more humor and mockery than women. Probably there's a self mockery in this, or greater familiarity. These aren't real people any more than characters encountered in a book. I know them all quite well and have never seen them before.
