About The Artwork
I look for unique places in a country, a city or neighborhoods I visit. The scenes found are from exploring spaces that are ordinary and familiar to the inhabitants' lives. Some of these places are near where I live and work. I notice a time during the day or season that makes what is familiar extraordinary. My observations inspire a fresh awareness in the present. I noticed a perspective never seen before. I hope the viewer feels a sense of place and an extraordinary view of something so seemingly mundane. I want to capture the light and shadow of early morning or late afternoon sunset. I use a layered approach to my drawing. I start with one color and cover the whole surface. I use a subtractive method of pulling (erasing) out the areas of highlights. Then slowly build up layers of color marks to enhance the middle ground and deepen the shadows.
