About The Artwork

This piece is inspired by a lifelong love of road movies and adventures – from touring Indiana and breaking down in an old station wagon with my Dad, to watching the likes of Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Dennis Weaver blasting down American highways. The old map comes from the ‘50s or ‘60s and could be picked up from Texaco gas stations for free. Other gas companies gave them out too, and there’s a whole world of collectors who look out for these things today. For me, it captures a golden era of motoring and recalls movies like Duel, which is the first road movie I ever saw. And those boots – I waited ages for the right pair to come along. They had to be perfectly beaten up, almost unwearable thanks to decades of adventures already had, and this Laredo pair fitted the bill. The only things missing from this scene are the smell of petrol and the revving of an engine.

Amy Miles is an artist based in East London, working in a hyperrealistic style using coloured pencils and graphite. After working in the fashion industry as a writer and editor for a decade, she decided to pursue drawing and visual art. Inspired by artists such as Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and Wes Lang, Amy’s work explores the relationship we have with objects, pop culture products and brands. Her work is influenced by a lifelong interest in Americana, the open road, cowboys, the 1970s, and luxury fashion. Her presentation of objects – often alone on white paper – reflects the way luxury items are showcased in product photography. Each work requires long periods of precise drawing to complete, with some pieces taking more than 80 hours to produce. They become a meditation on the tiny details of each object that would otherwise go unnoticed, encouraging the viewer to spend time appreciating the small things, too. Most recently, Amy's work has been featured in the Coloured Pencil Magazine, and she has attended London's Slade School of Fine Art to develop a burgeoning painting practice.
