About The Artwork

Of the many hedgehogs which used to visit my garden these two were my favourite, Klaus (centre) and the infamous Redbum (top). I too am sometimes nocturnal, so as soon as I would hear aggressive huffing or the tinkle of broken pottery, I knew it would would be one or both of the pair causing mayhem and putting the other hogs off thie dinner. Using a headtorch and provided I sat still enough (and could stay warm), I could sit and sketch my visitors quite freely. Alas despite feeding and making my garden as hedgehog friendly as possible I have seen them less and less in recent years, sometimes none, and only one this year. I originally make this image as a homage, but now there is a sadness to it, something irriplaceable that has passsed me by. Executed in ink, charcoal and white pencil, the lack of colour seems all the more poigniant.

Arron Kuiper (b.1984) is a Welsh artist who has practiced for over a decade in his native North Wales. He has garnered a handful of national awards, shown extensively across the U.K. including 2 Solo Exhibitions, has work on permanent display and in a number of private collections as well as featuring in international art publications. He is currently represented by Tides Gallery, Swansea. He is best known for his invention of Sculptural Oil Painting but continues to combine a wide range of media and invented techniques with work in more traditional materials. This broad experimental approach and tendency towards zero waste is borne of growing up in poverty where, though he never quite had to beg for materials (lucky, as not many people carry around a tube of burnt umber on their person) he learned to develop and produce work with whatever was to hand. His themes and inspirations are as varied as the media he uses (and let's be honest, interpretation is in the eye of the viewer), but broadly it's about the people, land, environment and history of his homeland. He continues to make work in his shed, on a hillside, in the woods of rural North Wales.
