Panache Drawing

I'm inspired by old photographs, drawings, prints, and illustrations by artists like Ben Shahn and David Stone Martin and Ronald Searle and others. I didn't go to art school. (I have taught at an art school.) So I've learned by looking and admiring and envying the snap and verve of other artists' work and drawing from that. This gentleman with his guardsman's mustache was drawn long enough ago I don't remember what the inspiration was, but the modeling of the face and the pose makes me think it was Shahn. I suspect the distressed chair signified something but can't remember what.
