About The Artwork

I was artist-in-residence at Mia (Minneapolis Institute of Art) in 2014 and spent my time drawing around the museum and in the museum library. I am always most at home among books. I found this figurine in a book. Dairymaid? Probably. It's Meissen, fragile, delicately poised and lovely, as we like to think rural life is, or was. Mostly this kind of figurine captures a culture's ideal of itself and lives on mantelpieces in cities. In this case many of those cities and figurines were bombed and burned in the war, by people in planes, from towns and farms over here, whose mantelpieces are decorated with less elegant tchotchkes, maybe some of them Hummels brought back from the Occupation. This girl imagined in an earlier century may have been among the rural folk tossed around by the 30 Years War, or the 7 Years War. Beauty is fragile. Unheroism like this is more pleasant to look at over the hearth or in the hall by the bedroom.
