About The Artwork

The Riace bronzes , also called the Riace Warriors, are two full-size Greek bronze statues of naked bearded warriors, cast about 460–450 BC that were found in the sea in 1972 near Riace, Calabria, in southern Italy. The bronzes are now in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in the nearby city of Reggio Calabria. They are two of the few surviving full-size ancient Greek bronzes (which were usually melted down in later times), and as such demonstrate the technical craftsmanship and artistic features that were achieved at this time. Here we restore them with all anatomical details, following the baroque style of drawing. In the restoration, the shields were removed to reveal the bodies of the warriors, and the counter movement/contrapposto stance of the statues was emphasized. Chronology of the Riace warriors: Between 460 and 420 B.C.E. Identifications: The two statues represent Tydeus (Statue A) and Amphiaraus (Statue B), two warriors from Aeschylus’ tragic play, Seven Against Thebes. https://journals.openedition.org/techne/2707?lang=en
