About The Artwork

The six proposals of an initial Water & Ink series were done using an ink between lavender and purple based on that band of purple color that the crest or logo of Real Madrid had when I was a child, back in the 1970s. I used to walk from home -15 minutes- to the football pitch with my parents to watch Real Madrid playing, Madrid, as the followers in Spain call to the Real Madrid Football Club. The purple band of the logo changed into blue celebrating the Centenary, but my memory reminds the purple. I was lucky to see many great football players since 1972: I remember very well García Remón and Miguel Ángel as goalkeepers, Benito, Zoco, Pirri, Velázquez, Grosso, Amancio, Camacho, Netzer, Del Bosque, the curly hair of Breitner, Sol, and Santillana jumping always more than the defenders to score a goal. Roberto Martinez (Pippi) and Jensen, Stielike and the unforgettable Juanito. I recall Alfredo Di Stéfano with whom we used to meet in the bar he used to frequent when the game was over, the Italian restaurant Da Renzo, Butragueño, Valdano and his long explanations, Gordillo without shin guards, the great Hugo Sánchez, Raúl the Magician, Roberto Carlos, Redondo, Mitjatovic, Casillas, Zidane, Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Pepe, Xabi Alonso, Di Maria, the unparalleled Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Higuain, Bale, Kroos, Varane. I like to call this series 'Purple Heart' because of the courage of the players until the last minute in the pitch, like those war heroes who fight in the battle, often leaving their lives in it. 'Purple Heart' is a tribute to the players, the whole team, the Club, its memberships and followers. Hala Madrid!
