I only have a few of these smaller folders, and I love them; for some reason they feel more intimate than the larger ones even though they are only a few inches smaller. And this one is special because it is green- normally NOT my color, but there is something about this piece that I just LOVE. There are a couple layered figures here that merge into one. On her head, I collaged a tracing I did of an eagle head. I often use my own work for collage material. There are lots of little details here and some were on the folder before I even started like the lines underneath, some pen and pencil marks, squiggles and notes. Then I added the lettering stencil in black and messed it up (truthfully I’m not a very good stenciler but I like it when it comes out all blurry and messy). This is another one of those 2-5 minute gesture drawing poses that just turned out. They rarely do, but once in a while… HISTORY: As part of my art practice I go to weekly figure drawing groups. In figure drawing, I am fast, furious and heavy handed as I carve my line out of space. Each week I draw, go back to the studio, paint over, collage over and write over the parts that don’t seem to be working. I go back to figure drawing and redraw, then cut, paste, paint, and draw and draw and draw until I get something that speaks to me. I never throw anything out. I work and rework until I discover a story evolving. In this way, my practice is also my process. My folders are a limited-edition series of drawings where I only have a certain amount of them and when they are done, that’s it. I work on many pieces at once, so a figurative folder can take years to finish. I layer and layer and rework and rework. My process is not linear, so I may begin with the words in the middle. I write them or draw them as they come to me, not intentionally trying to write a story. English is written left to right and top to bottom, so that is typically how the audience reads the piece. So the meaning you get from the piece is your own story, and not the story I was attempting to write or tell. In this way, my work is collaborative wherein I create the piece, but ultimately the viewer develops the meaning.
